How to Buy Books:

The simplest approach to purchasing is to attend one of our pickauctions! The day of the auction, inspection of the books begins at 1:30 p.m. at the B. P. Learned Mission located at 40 Shaw Street in New London, CT. The auction begins at 6 p.m., and most auctions are over by 8:30 p.m. For known customers, we will execute advance bids on their behalf.

Wondering how a pick auction works? Imagine a large room with several tables piled high with books. Around part of the perimeter of the room are empty tables on which a person's picks chosen books, are placed. These small groups of books, called lots, are assigned a bidding number and are described briefly, for example as five American history books, eight books of poetry with two signed, or one art book. All bidders inspect these books prior to the start of the auction and have the right to bid on them during the auction. The auction begins with the first group of books (Lot 1) described, and bids asked for. All bidding begins at $10 per lot.

The following information is printed on the back of each bidding card and offers additional insight into how the auction operates.

    CFA “PICK” BOOK AUCTION RULES
Welcome…Please read the following rules to this book auction CAREFULLY:

    • The tables in the center of the room are each marked with a TABLE NUMBER. Different numbers represent different consignments of books.
    • You may choose up to 10 books to assemble a “lot” from one or more tables with the SAME NUMBER providing they have a similar theme. For example, up to 10 books on American history could be one “lot”; 10 books on art could be a 2nd “lot, etc. NOTE: WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO SPLIT LOTS. For example, we might divide ten books on history into two piles: 5 on American history and 5 on European history.
    • Once you assemble a pile of up to 10 books from tables with the same number, bring them to a staff member who will direct you to the person assembling the 1st round of the auction. This person will ask you what TABLE NUMBER the books came from and will decide if your “lot” is acceptable or if it needs to be divided. REMEMBER DIVIDING A LOT IS OUR DECISION NOT YOURS.
    • If acceptable, your “lot” will be assigned a number. Make a note of this number! When the auctioneer calls this number tonight and describes the “lot” and calls for bids you should be prepared to bid at least $10 for the “lot.” The highest bid is awarded the “lot”.
    • You may assemble as many “lots” as you wish until the staff closes the 1st round.
    • When the 1st round of the auction is completed, you will be invited to revisit the tables to assemble additional “lots”. The same rules described earlier apply.
    • Before the 2nd and final round of bidding begins, ALL of the remaining books on each table will be sold as one “lot”.
    • The minimum bid is $10. If you are not prepared to bid at least $10 on a “lot” then DO NOT bring it forward to place it up for bid!
    • Known customers may leave absentee bids that will be executed by the auctioneer.
    • Clearly hold up that bidding number so the auctioneer understands you are interested in a “lot.” If the auctioneer misses your bid and sells the “lot” to another person you are out of luck. It is your responsibility to indicate your interest in purchasing a book or books.
    • CT SALES TAX of 6.35% is charged on all sales unless you have a tax resale number on file with us. In addition, a 15% BUYERS PREMIUM is accessed on all sales.
    • CHECKS OR CASH ONLY…NO CREDIT CARDS OR CREDIT EXTENDED…ALL SALES ARE FINAL…DO NOT BID ON AN ITEM UNLESS YOU ARE SURE YOU WANT TO OWN IT!!!!
